Revenue streams for Instagram creators
How can Instagram influencers earn revenue directly from their audience, beyond ads and brand partnerships?
Three in-app monetisation features — Premium Content, Tips and paid Special DMs — let influencers earn directly from followers. They are prioritised by value and effort, measured with HEART metrics and launched in three phases.

Problem overview
The brief: build a new revenue stream for influencers on Instagram. Recommend 2–3 product features that let influencers earn from their audience, wireframe them in Figma, and define a launch plan and success metrics.
Market context
- The deck cites an InsightSLICE report: the global digital content creation market is expected to reach US$38.2 billion by 2030, at a 12% CAGR from 2020 to 2030.
- Instagram has almost 1 billion active users, who spend 10+ hours per user per month on it.
- The deck cites that 55% of fashion buyers have purchased as a result of an Instagram creator's post.
- Other platforms already offer creator monetisation — YouTube, Twitch, Twitter and Gumroad.
Overall business goal
"To capture and share the world's moments."
User personas
Pain points are drawn from interviews and articles published about influencers. All characters are fictional.
Akhil
Full-time celebrity (actor)
Has a large audience and communicates with them constantly.
- Pain:
- Wants to explore revenue methods other than ads.
Priya
Part-time influencer (model)
Works at a software company. Earns only a modest amount through brand partnerships on Instagram.
- Pain:
- Looking for more revenue on Instagram.
Sanjay
Chef and part-time cooking influencer
Uses cooking content to promote his business.
- Pain:
- Has high engagement but fails to turn his following into profit.
Proposed features
Each feature is wireframed against the current Instagram UI — a new profile tab, a tip icon on Lives and Reels, and a Special DM option in chat.
Premium Content
Feature 1 · Akhil, Sanjay, Priya- Context: the deck cites a report expecting considerable demand for premium entertainment by 2030 — audiences increasingly value quality, curated material, expect high quality in VOD and want high-quality news as fake news rises.
- Influencers create premium content under their own brand; revenue depends on the influencer's popularity on Instagram.
- Tapping premium content → payment area. Users choose an amount and plan, and pay by credit/debit card or UPI.
- Members-only content lives in a new tab on the profile page. Users subscribe and pay based on the influencer's popularity.
- Impact
- Significantly eases the pain of influencers like Akhil and Sanjay who are searching for income. Also helps influencers like Priya, to a lesser extent. In the long term, benefits aspiring and small influencers too.
Tip
Feature 2 · Devoted followers- Context: built for devoted followers who love the content and the influencer. Influencers with humanitarian, cultural, charitable or volunteer interests can also use it to gain public support.
- Followers donate to a creator during an Instagram Live or on content they love — similar to YouTube's Super Chat and Super Thanks.
- Tapping the tip symbol lets users enter any amount.
- The tipped amount is shown in the chat and added to the influencer's wallet.
- Impact
- Influencers can monetise their following with live advice, and followers can show appreciation seamlessly.
Special DM
Feature 3 · Akhil, Priya, Sanjay- Context: a plan that lets users send paid Special DMs to their favourite influencers.
- Tapping the Special DM icon → payment area. Users can then send a customised DM with GIFs or text.
- Each influencer sets a minimum price based on their fame.
- Instagram sends influencers regular personal email reminders to respond to Special DM users.
- Impact
- Addresses the concerns of all three personas — Akhil, Priya and Sanjay. Because every influencer has a distinct following, Special DMs help users engage efficiently.
Feature prioritisation
Business value, customer benefit and ease of implementation are each rated 1–10.

| Tip | 9 | 8 | 7 | 24 | Immediate |
| Special DM | 6 | 7 | 7 | 20 | Near-term |

Go-to-market strategy
Step 1 — Build anticipation (15–20 days)
Use push notifications and emails to catch viewers' attention. Run social media marketing across several channels. Partner with well-known celebrities and industry leaders on Instagram to debut a teaser of the new features.
Step 2 — Beta (1–1.5 months)
Release the finished feature to a select group of users on Instagram's beta platform. After one month, collect beta feedback, fix faults and refine functionality as needed.
Step 3 — Final launch
Announce the new functionality on social media once issues are resolved, then release the final version a week later with a high-quality, well-defined feature tour. Run fresh challenges and popular media formats to keep people engaged with the feature.
Launch risk — payment security
All three features rely heavily on payments, so payment security must be ensured continuously to keep the user experience seamless.
